Those interested in unique fitness activities might like the sound of the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, which starts with a swim from the shore of the island prison. San Francisco also hosts its popular annual Pride Parade in late June.

Patriotic opportunities are plentiful, including fireworks at Pier 39 and many local parades. While there won't be quite as many events to enjoy, there's still something for everyone — and these events primarily attract locals. If you love physical challenges but can't make the July marathon, try September's Peak2Peak, which navigates a variety of scenic peaks and introduces both locals and visitors to the city's greatest gems. Sports fans can take advantage of basketball season starting and visit the Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors.
