POINT OF INTEREST

Alaska State Museum

395 Whittier St., Juneau, Alaska

Artifacts and documents detailing Alaska's history—its original inhabitants, natural history, occupation by Russia, and eventual purchase and statehood—have a home in the striking and lofty Father Andrew P. Kashevaroff building in downtown Juneau. The expansive Alaska Native collection features items from the region's major cultural groups.

The Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum (SLAM) collection comprises some 32,000 cataloged objects, including 15,000 pieces in the Alaska Native collection alone. Travelers will find Indigenous Alaskan art, as well as natural history collections of gemstones, mounted plants, and fossils all on the first floor; upstairs, massive floor-to-ceiling windows enclose the library. The atrium is especially popular, as it houses a life-sized eagle tree replica, complete with a nest, common in some parts of the state.

  • SLAM is a must-see for history buffs, art lovers, and families.

  • Museum admission is free for children under 18.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible, and offers accessible parking in the garage on Whittier Street.

The museum is on Whittier Street in downtown Juneau, within easy walking distance of the city's major attractions.

The museum is open throughout the year, though it may have reduced hours throughout the winter months. It's best to check the schedule before visiting.

Travelers to Alaska who plan to spend time in Sitka should set aside an hour or two to visit the Sheldon Jackson Museum, SLAM’s sister location. This collection highlights objects from each of Alaska’s Native groups, including rescued totem poles from the 19th century and a helmet worn by a Tlingit warrior.
