POINT OF INTEREST

Bathsheba Beach

Bathsheba, Saint Joseph

According to legend, Bathsheba (wife of King David bathed in milk to keep her skin smooth and soft. Barbados locals say the white, frothy waters of Bathsheba Beach, named in her honor, have similar healing powers, making it a popular spot for tourists. The coast is also dotted with huge boulders broken off from the nearby coral reef.

Surfers love riding the wild Atlantic waves and navigating the strong currents that Bathsheba Beach is famous for, while more leisurely travelers enjoy taking in its picturesque landscapes and soaking in the relaxing mineral pools lined by coral reefs. The nearby fishing village is filled with friendly locals, rum shops, and restaurants serving up classic Barbados fare. Most guided sightseeing tours of the island, as well as shore excursions, include a stop at the photogenic beach.

  • Strong undertows make swimming at this beach rather risky, so stick to soaking in the protected pools.
  • The foamy surf at Bathsheba Beach has earned it the nickname, Soup Bowl. It’s home to both local and international surfing championships.
  • There are restrooms at Bathsheba Beach.

Bathsheba Beach is located on the central eastern coast of Barbados, in the parish of Saint Joseph. Guided tours typically provide roundtrip transportation to/from Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, where cruise ships dock. Otherwise, rent a car or grab a taxi to access this beach as public transportation is limited.

If you’re into surfing, plan to visit Bathsheba Beach in November when you can catch some championship events. Although this is during hurricane season, the island rarely gets hit by the powerful storms, plus rates are lower at this time. December to April is Barbados’ peak tourist season, so expect the biggest crowds then.

Inland from Bathsheba Beach, Harrison’s Cave is full of stalactites, stalagmites, and waterfalls, and is a popular stop on guided tours of the island. Travelers can easily explore the underground cavern via a tram ride or the more adventurous can wander on foot with headlamps, helmets, and knee pads.
