POINT OF INTEREST

Cane Garden Bay

British Virgin Islands

Surf’s up in the jewel of the British Virgin Islands, Cane Garden Bay. On the northwestern coastline of Tortola island, this portion of the beach, close to Road Town, is a favorite among water sports enthusiasts. From surfing, boating, jet-skiing, and boogie boarding to simply swimming, Cane Garden Bay’s spacious and well-protected anchorage is a premier beach destination.

The area is known not only for for its laid-back beach lifestyle and water sports, but also its shoreside activities, with plenty of restaurants, clubs, pubs, and music spots, such as at Quito’s Gazebo, where owner Quito Rymer entertains his customers with nightly dance performances. Plus, Cane Garden Bay is now also a popular place to get hitched, with many newlyweds celebrating at Myett's restaurant and hotel after getting married down by the water.

  • Nearby shops offer canoes, powerboats, windsurfers, and surfboards for rent.
  • The area is well-stocked with restaurants, pubs, and shops.
  • The bay’s shallow water and gentle waves make it a good spot for visitors with small kids.
  • Cane Garden Bay is suited for experienced surfers because of the coral reefs.

To reach Tortola, you can fly into Terrance B Lettsome International Airport (formerly known as Beef Island Airport), though since it's a small airport, flights can be pricey. It's more economical to fly to St. Thomas and take the ferry to Tortola. Private boat charters are also available, with routes that include various nearby islands. Cruise-ship passengers take a cab from the terminal to Cane Garden Bay, about 15 minutes away.

Cane Garden Bay is the most popular spot on Tortola, frequented by day-trippers, cruise-ship passengers, and those staying on the island. If possible, avoid visiting when a cruise ship is in port, and expect the biggest crowds during the winter months. Otherwise, arrive early to claim your spot on the sand.

If you’re looking for a quieter beach scene, visit Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. A popular day trip from nearby islands, this tiny paradise offers a relaxed setting with plenty of food and drink options. Although it’s typically less crowded than Cane Garden Bay, Jost Van Dyke does get rowdy sometimes, particularly on New Year’s Eve, when it’s famous for its boat parties.
