Chapel of the Transfiguration

Moose, Wyoming

The log-cabin-style Chapel of the Transfiguration sits against the backdrop of the jagged Teton Range near the southern entrance of Grand Tetons National Park. The rustic church was built in 1925 with a window above the alter framing the majestic mountains. Today it still offers services and its scenic setting makes it a popular spot for weddings, sightseeing, and photography.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration, also known as the Outdoor Chapel, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. You can visit the chapel on a day trip tour from Jackson, Wyoming and let someone else do the driving while you take in the majestic views and scan for wildlife on the journey through the park. Tours that stop at the chapel also include other park highlights such as visiting Jenny Lake and learning about the geology of the Tetons.

  • The chapel is a favorite for weddings, photographers, and worshipers.
  • Church services and weddings are only held in the summer.
  • The chapel is a religious site and respect is requested.
  • Check ahead for snow conditions if you want to visit the church outside of summer.
  • The chapel is wheelchair accessible and seats 65 people with additional seating outside.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration is 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) north of Jackson, Wyoming just inside the park’s Moose Entrance. Turn left onto Chapel of the Transfiguration Road 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of Moose Junction. You can take a tour to the chapel with pickup and drop-off from Jackson.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration is open from May until September, snow conditions permitting. Weddings and services are only held in the summer. Episcopal Church services are held every summer Sunday at 8am and 10am.xa0 Morning is the best time to photograph the church as the mountains are in shadow later in the day.

Many couples choose to exchange vows at this rustic church which lends itself to picturesque wedding photos both at the altar and outside after the ceremony. Unlike other locations in the national park, permits are not required to hold a wedding at the chapel. Dates are available from Memorial Day through September based on the availability of the Episcopal Church clergy. There is a bride’s cabin for the bride and attendants to use one hour before the wedding.
