POINT OF INTEREST

Confederation Bridge

Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island

Confederation Bridge stretches 8 miles (13 kilometers) in length, making it the longest bridge in the world to cross ice-covered waters. Completed in 1997, the bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity, showcasing advanced engineering techniques. While crossing, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding coastal scenery.

The bridge's elevated position provides panoramic vistas of the sparkling waters, the rugged coastline, and the Northumberland Strait. The ever-changing hues of the sky and the shimmering waters create a captivating backdrop throughout your journey. The bridge has become an iconic symbol of the province and is often featured in photographs and postcards, representing the connection between Prince Edward Island and the mainland province of New Brunswick.

  • No pedestrians or cyclists are allowed on the bridge.

  • As a toll bridge, drivers leaving Prince Edward Island are charged a fee.

  • The speed limit on the bridge is 50 mph (80 kmh)

From the city of Moncton in New Brunswick, it’s a 1-hr drive to Confederation Bridge along the Trans-Canada Highway. On the Prince Edward Island side, it’s a 50-minute drive from the city of Charlottetown, also via the Trans-Canada Highway. A shuttle service for pedestrians operates from 6am to 10pm for those being picked up on either end.

Spring brings the awakening of nature and the bloom of flora in the region. Temperatures can reach 59°F, making it a pleasant time to visit. The surroundings come alive with fresh greenery and colorful blossoms, creating a scenic and rejuvenating atmosphere. Spring is an excellent time for leisurely walks, photography enthusiasts looking to capture the beauty of the changing seasons, and experiencing the bridge at a more relaxed pace.

For stunning views of the bridge and the perfect angle to capture it, visit Port Borden Front Range Lighthouse on Prince Edward Island. The small lighthouse was once used to help guide boats through the treacherous waters of Northumberland Strait before the construction of the bridge—make a stop here and imagine life as it was for the islanders before the establishment of the “fixed link.”
