POINT OF INTEREST

Confederation Centre of the Arts

145 Richmond St., Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

The scale of the Confederation Centre of the Arts is proof of Prince Edward Island’s dedication to arts and culture—the sprawling center takes up an entire city block in the heart of Charlottetown. The brutalist-style buildings give a modern frame to a space honoring Canadian history.

This multipurpose complex offers something for everyone—families flock to the regular performances of Anne of Green Gables-The Musical, while art lovers hit the center’s gallery. With plenty of outdoor space, it’s a great place to relax with a picnic before exploring the many buildings. In the evening, head to the Mack; this intimate, cabaret-style theater hosts everything from stand-up comedy to tribute concerts, and it’s a great place to get in touch with PEI’s cultural scene.

  • If you’re planning on seeing a show, be sure to book tickets in advance.

  • The Confederation Centre is wheelchair accessible.

  • Keep an eye out for the historically dressed Confederation Players, who offer walking tours and photo opportunities.

Charlottetown’s public transit, T3, offers good coverage of the city, with buses stopping at the nearby Grafton and Confederation Centre bus stop. If you’re driving, it can be challenging to find parking if you’re planning to see a show at the theater.

From mid-June until the end of September, Confederation Centre is one of the hosts of the Charlottetown Festival. The musical theater festival has been running since 1965, offering a blend of fan favorites (such as Anne of Green Gables–The Musical), and new works commissioned from up-and-coming directors. During this time, Confederation Centre is at its liveliest.

If you have some advance notice before your trip, check the Confederation Centre’s calendar for information on possible preview performances—these sneak-peek shows offer a glimpse into how theater evolves, and ticket prices are often reduced. Both the Mack and the Sobey Family Theatre host productions throughout the year.
