Dead Horse Point State Park

The swooping view of the Colorado River from Dead Horse Point is iconic, but there’s much more to this desert park than a single overlook. A network of trails here ranges from intermediate mountain biking to wheelchair-accessible pavement, with scenic overlooks, shade shelters, and interpretive signs throughout.
Dead Horse Point State Park sprawls across a slender mesa, which provides a relatively level surface for walking and mountain biking. The most popular trail is the wheelchair-accessible, 200-foot (61-meter) Dead Horse Point Overlook Trail to the famous viewpoint over the Colorado River. Tours of Dead Horse Point State Park range from half-day outings to all-day trips. Options include mountain biking, hiking, and photography tours, and the state park is sometimes combined with other area parks such as Arches and Canyonlands.

The entrance station to Dead Horse Point State Park is located on Route 313, which is 33 miles (53 kilometers) and roughly 40 minutes from Moab. Entrance fees are charged per vehicle, with discounts for seniors. No public transit is available, but many tours include pickup and drop-off at location in Moab.
Sunrise and sunset are the two most spectacular times to visit this state park, where red rocks turn fiery in soft light. According to many photographers, the best time to take photos here is at twilight, either 30 minutes before or 30 minutes sunrise or sunset.
An abundance of scenic drives and viewing areas in parks near Moab mean there’s plenty to see from a wheelchair. In Canyonlands National Park, the Island in the Sky area has the most accessible options; ranger-led programs are held in a wheelchair-friendly area here. The scenic drives at Arches National Park also have wheelchair-accessible facilities. Wheelchair-accessible trails at Arches can be found at Park Avenue Viewpoint, Balanced Rock, and the Windows Trail, among others.
