POINT OF INTEREST

Florida Air Museum

4175 Medulla Road, Lakehead, Florida

This shrine to human flight holds enough vintage and modern aircraft to excite even the most seasoned aviation fans. Classic, antique, warbird, ultra-light, and unique aircraft spanning history from the Wright Brothers to modern NASA launches are the museum's claim to fame, plus an educational restoration center. Children will love the flight simulators and educational exhibits.

Florida's official aviation museum is on the Sun 'N Fun Aerospace Expo campus near the Lakeland Linder International Airport. You can easily explore the museum from either place or visit on your own—you'll need admission tickets and upgrades for special screenings of events. You can head straight for most of the aircraft in the main building, check out the larger planes in the hangar, or visit the Buehler aircraft restoration center next door.

  • The main exhibition space is wheelchair-accessible.

  • There are restaurants, shops, and movie theaters at Lakeside Village nearby.

  • Children 10 and under and active military members enter for free.

  • Don’t miss the full-scale replica of the Wright Flyer.

  • Museum members and members of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) get discounted admission.

The museum is just outside Lakeland on the Sun 'N Fun Aerospace Expo campus near the Lakeland Linder International Airport. This part of central Florida isn’t well-connected by public transport—it’s a 20-minute drive to the museum from Lakeland and around 40 minutes from Tampa along mostly Interstate 4.

The museum is open from mid-morning to late afternoon from Monday through Saturday and lunchtime to late afternoon on Sundays. It sometimes closes for special events, so check the museum website before your visit to see the schedule of year-round educational experiences such as camps, tours, workshops, and talks.

There are many types of planes at the Florida Air Museum, with the main building holding much of the collection. You can walk among one-of-a-kind, vintage, modern, and even home-built aircraft—among them are planes designed for home-building in the 1930s, early subsonic trainers, recent experiments, and reproductions from the very early stages of human flight.
