POINT OF INTEREST

Fort Myers Beach

Fort Myers, Florida

A far cry from the busy beaches of Miami or Fort Lauderdale, this 7-mile (11-kilometer) expanse of pristine Florida coastline has managed to preserve its sleepy charm. Beachgoers can enjoy the sprawling sky and white sand dunes of the Gulf Coast, all while staying in a nearby resort town that offers a relaxed vibe and upscale amenities.

Fort Myers Beach offers plenty of ways to escape the daily grind. Active travelers can take advantage of parasailing, deep sea fishing, windsurfing, and dolphin-spotting cruises that depart from the beach and nearby Fort Myers harbor. However, one of the most popular pastimes is dropping a towel or renting a beach umbrella and taking it easy on the sugar-soft sands. The northern stretch of beach is known for a livelier atmosphere, while the south becomes quieter and more residential.

  • Fort Myers Beach is a must-visit for families and sun seekers.

  • With a gentle slope and no big waves, the beach is generally safe for swimming.

  • Don’t forget to pack a bathing suit, beach towel, and sun protection.

  • The islands of Sanibel and Captiva make easy day trips from Fort Myers Beach.

Fort Myers Beach is just south of Fort Myers on Estero Island and is connected by bridge to Sanibel Island. More than 20 public beach access points are along Estero Boulevard, most with parking.

For mild weather and fewer crowds, visit between March and May (although spring break can bring an influx of visitors). The beach is at its busiest during the summer months.

Fort Myers Beach has its own Times Square, and while nothing compared to the bright lights and traffic jams of the one in New York, it remains the hub of activity on Estero Island. If you’re looking to take a break from the beach, head to this colorful, laid-back plaza for shopping, dining, live street performers, and some of the best people-watching in Fort Myers.
