POINT OF INTEREST

Frederic Remington Art Museum

303 Washington St., Ogdensburg, New York

This museum in Ogdensburg, New York is dedicated to Frederic Remington—an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer known for Western American Art. Explore the halls of the artist's former home, which now houses the museum, and see a lifetime's worth of his Wild West-themed oil paintings, bronze sculptures, watercolors, sketches, and personal items.

The museum is ideal for admirers of the little-known Remington and those interested in Western American Art, which generally features the daily life of cowboys and American Indians of the American West. The house-sized museum's main collection, which includes some of the artist's best-known paintings, sculptures, watercolors, and sketches, are in the Albert Priest Newell Gallery—you can easily see these and his personal belongings in 1-2 hours.

  • Seniors, youths, and military personnel plus their family members receive admission discounts.

  • The museum is wheelchair-accessible and lends wheelchairs for free.

  • Book adult and school-group tours for a small fee.

The museum is on Washington Street in Ogdensburg, New York—a small town on the St. Lawrence River at the US-Canada border, about 1 hour from Ottawa and 2 hours north of Syracuse. Driving is the best way to get around this small town; street parking is readily available on Washington and Caroline Streets.

The museum is open from mid-morning to late afternoon from Thursday through Saturday but has a seasonal schedule subject to change throughout the year. It closes on New Year's Day, Easter, the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day, and hosts an annual holiday open house in early December.

While Ogdensburg is in northern New York State on the Canada-US border, it's not particularly close to Niagara Falls. To reach the falls from the small town on the St. Lawrence River, drive south to Syracuse and west through Buffalo to the town of Niagara Falls—it's a 4.5–5 hour drive.
