GulfQuest: National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico

155 Water St., Mobile, Alabama

Set in a replica container ship overlooking the Gulf Coast of Alabama, GulfQuest: National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico is home to 90 interactive exhibits about the history and culture of America's Sea. Learn about the gulf’s economy, marine archeology, shipwrecks, hurricanes, and more in exhibits spread throughout the ship.

GulfQuest is an educational and engaging stop on Mobile’s scenic riverfront. The hands-on museum has everything from a panoramic pilot simulation to the Great Gulf Challenge—an interactive game that let visitors try their hand at managing the economic and environmental challenges facing the gulf. GulfQuest can also arrange guided tours for large groups.

  • GulfQuest is popular with maritime enthusiasts and history buffs.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible and has wheelchairs available to borrow on a first-come-first-serve basis.

  • GulfQuest’s on-site cafe, the Galley, offers the only outdoor, waterfront dining on the Mobile River.

  • You can purchase gifts at the Treasures Museum Store.

GulfQuest sits on the Mobile waterfront, close to downtown, and is easily accessible on foot from many downtown attractions and accommodations. The town of Mobile is about 150 miles (241 kilometers) east of New Orleans on I-10 East.

The museum is open Tuesday–Sunday and is closed on major holidays, including Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras. Check the museum’s schedule to find out about temporary exhibits.

In addition to GulfQuest, the small town of Mobile offers several other surprisingly impressive museums. Just one street away, you can visit the History Museum of Mobile, the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center, and the Fort of Colonial Mobile. You can also pair a visit to GulfQuest with a trip to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.
