POINT OF INTEREST

Jewell Gardens

Jewell Gardens, Skagway, Alaska

Thanks to fertile soil and long summer days, Skagway is known as the “Garden City of Alaska” and has a rich tradition of vegetable gardening and flower landscaping. Jewell Gardens and Garden City Glassworks is a popular attraction for Skagway visitors, featuring beautiful wildflower gardens, organic vegetable patches, and Alaska’s only glassblowing studio open to guests.

Visitors are welcome to tour the garden grounds on their own or as part of a garden or culinary tour. Opt for the glassblowing experience, which combines a garden tour with a glassblowing class, where you’ll make your own glass souvenir to take home. Tours can be combined with an afternoon tea or lunch at the on-site café, which highlights organic, seasonal produce grown in the gardens. The gift shop sells hand-blown glass ornaments made in the Garden City Glassworks studio.

  • Flower enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Jewell Gardens.

  • There's an entry fee to visit the gardens, and tours and workshops are available at an additional cost.

  • Closed-toe shoes are required for all glassblowing tours.

  • The Jewell Gardens and glassblowing experiences are wheelchair accessible.

The Jewell Gardens are located on the opposite side of Skagway from the waterfront, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the cruise port, and can be reached by taking a SMART shuttle from the cruise port or from downtown. Tours of Jewell Gardens often include round-trip transportation from Skagway’s Historic District.

The Jewell Gardens are open daily from early May through late September, and its on-site restaurant is open for lunch. Thousands of tulips delight visitors in May, and special festivals and events are offered during the summer months.

Visitors can watch glass artists melt and mold glass into beautiful works of art at the Garden City Glassworks studio located in Jewell Gardens. You’ll also want to keep your eye out for unique glass sculptures throughout the gardens. To learn more about the art of glassblowing, you can take a workshop and create your own piece under the supervision of a professional glass artist.
