The city of Juneau shines a spotlight on its rich cultural heritage and history at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Exhibits are entertaining and hands-on, with displays including a full-scale replica fish trap, interactive mining gallery, totem poles, Tlingit artifacts, historic photographs, and a detailed relief map of Juneau.

The diverse collection at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum offers an excellent introduction to the region’s history. Exhibits are divided among four galleries: General History, Hands-On Mining, Map Case, and Politics, Personalities & Power. The museum is featured as a stop on self-guided audio tours of the Alaskan state capital, along with Marine Park, St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, and the capitol building. You can also take a walking tour of Juneau offered by the museum itself, focusing on topics like geology, mining history, and true crime; these tours include museum admission.

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum is in downtown Juneau, right across from the Alaska State Capitol. It’s within easy walking distance of most places in town.

The museum is open daily during the summer (May to September) and Tuesday to Saturday during the winter (October to April). Admission is free during the winter.

The Alaska State Museum offers a diverse collection covering natural and human history, while the Last Chance Mining Museum focuses on Juneau’s Gold Rush history.
