Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp

Mile 1 Liarsville Road, Skagway, Alaska

Nestled at the feet of White Pass north of Skagway, this restaurant and Klondike Gold Rush-themed mining camp offers visitors the chance to try an Alaskan “feast in the forest,” enjoy a local history lesson, and pan for gold in a waterfall nearby. A bordello, laundry tents, and a hippodrome hosting tongue-in-cheek melodramas and poetry readings round out the camp.

While the main draw is gold panning, with visitors getting to keep their findings, the full experience includes an Alaskan meal, access to the mining camp exhibits, theater and entertainment, and round-trip transportation from the cruise ship dock in Skagway. Travelers can also arrive with separate tour groups or on their own. The camp is open during the tourist season from late April to early October and serves lunch and dinner daily from May to September.

  • The camp is ideal for families looking for educational and fun experiences.

  • All-you-can-eat meals include grilled Alaskan salmon, chicken, rice, cornbread, pasta, beans, salad, and cake. Beer and wine are extra.

  • Visitors can have pictures taken with dance hall girls or the camp mascot, an Alaskan malamute named Denali.

  • Without a parent or guardian present, children 13–17 must have a signed parental consent form to participate.

  • The camp operates no matter the weather.

Liarsville is on Liarsville Road, about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) north of downtown Skagway. From there, drive up the Klondike Highway (Alaska Route 98) and turn right on Liarsville Road—the camp is on your right. If your shore excursion or tour doesn't take you to the camp, your best bet is a rental car or the SMART on-demand shuttle service.

The camp is open during the tourist season from late April to early October and serves lunch and dinner daily from May to September. The best weather—and the annual Summer Solstice Party—rolls around in Skagway in June. For your best chance to see the Northern Lights, try visiting after late August.

The White Pass, also known as the Dead Horse Trail, is a high mountain pass leading from Skagway to the headwaters of the Yukon River in British Columbia, Canada. It’s a popular tourist draw and the home of the White Pass and Yukon Route railroad running from Skagway to Whitehorse in the Yukon. Travelers can take scenic train rides from the Skagway cruise terminal to the White Pass Summit and back—a 40-mile (64 kilometers) 2.5-3 hour round-trip.
