POINT OF INTEREST

Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)

4801 E Fowler Ave., Tampa, Florida

The Museum of Science and Industry, known as MOSI, is an imaginative space designed for curiosity and interaction. Opened in 1982, it’s about 10 miles (16 kilometers) outside of Tampa and two blocks from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Its IMAX center was removed recently, but the museum still boasts hundreds of immersive permanent exhibits.

MOSI warrants a full-day visit for anyone who loves science, space, and engineering. It’s an engaging space where kids and the kid-at-heart can lie down on a bed of nails, construct and control a robot, and learn about the human body. Permanent exhibits such as the NASA-funded Mission: Moonbase and Dinovations Lab bring scientific concepts to life. A visit to MOSI is an interactive indoor activity that’s a perfect respite from the hot Florida sun.

To get tickets, purchase them in advance online or day-of at the museum admissions desk. MOSI is part of the Tampa Bay CityPass, which includes discounted admission to MOSI, Clearwater Aquarium, the Florida Aquarium, Busch Gardens, and ZooTampa.

  • The Saunders Planetarium, Sky Trail Ropes Course, and SciLinx Miniature Golf Course require separate admission tickets.

  • There are free SkyWatch stargazing sessions throughout the year—check the schedule when planning your visit.

  • MOSI is accessible for visitors in wheelchairs, with service animals, and with autism.

  • The Tampa Bay CityPASS offers value for visitors, as it offers discounted admission to MOSI plus four other Tampa Bay area attractions.

The Museum of Science and Industry is located at 4801 E. Fowler Ave., across the street from the southeast corner of the University of South Florida’s campus. Both Interstate 75 and Interstate 275 have exits onto Fowler Avenue, and MOSI is less than a 5-mile (8-kilometer) drive from each. Driving or ridesharing is the most convenient way to access MOSI, and on-site parking is available.

MOSI is generally open each day from 10am–5pm. With more than 100 hands-on experiences, you’ll want to leave plenty of time to visit. Planetarium showtimes vary each day, as well. It’s best to arrive as early as possible, especially if you want to try some of the museum’s supplementary offerings, like mini-golf or the ropes course.

Adults visiting alone—or those who want some museum time without their kids—should check out the Science After Dark events at MOSI. It’s like summer camp but with beer, wine, and appetizers. These hands-on experiences are for those who are 18 and over, offering opportunities to experiment with everything from robotics to setting off chemical reactions. Events are typically held once a month with new themes.
