Old Settlers’ Cemetery

Located in Charlotte’s Fourth Ward neighborhood next to the First Presbyterian Church, the Old Settlers’ Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Charlotte and one of the oldest in North Carolina. The cemetery operated between 1774 and 1878 and is the final burial place of many of Charlotte’s early settlers and prominent families.

Visit the Old Settlers’ Cemetery independently or as part of a Charlotte sightseeing, history, or haunted tour on foot, by golf cart, or by Segway. A grave directory and map can be found at the entrance to the cemetery, with plaques located outside the cemetery on West Fifth Street providing additional information. With benches and brick walkways shaded by oak trees, the cemetery is a popular green space for locals who reside or work in the area.

The Old Settlers’ Cemetery is located on West Fifth Street, between Poplar and Church Streets. Metered street parking is available in the area. Several buses stop nearby, including routes 11, 21, 48x, 53x, 63x, and 77x. The nearest CityLYNX Gold Line stop is Tryon Street.

The cemetery is open year-round and can be visited at any time. It’s a small cemetery, so you won’t need a lot of time to explore it, making it easy to combine with other historic attractions in the area. Tours focused on ghosts and paranormal activities tend to visit the cemetery at night.

Spanning more than 30 city blocks, the Fourth Ward is one of Charlotte’s most historic and beautiful neighborhoods, full of old churches and stately houses in different architectural styles. Other attractions include Fourth Ward Park, the Discovery Place Science, and the McColl Center.
