POINT OF INTEREST

Plazuela Machado

Mazatlan, Sinaloa

One of the oldest squares in Mazatlán, leafy Plazuela Machado dates from 1837 and is a jumping-off point for further exploration of the Mazatlán Old Town. Surrounded by brightly colored restaurants, galleries, and the Ángela Peralta Theater, visitors can soak up the laid back, family-friendly atmosphere at Plazuela Machado by day, and enjoy live music performances by night.

Sometimes known as Plaza Machado, Plazuela Machado was developed thanks to a donation of land from local businessman Juan Nepomuceno Machado. Highlights include the 19th century wrought iron gazebo, which sits at the heart of the plaza, as well as the wide range of nearby old town attractions, restaurants, and events—such as book and food fairs—that are held here. Most city tours—whether walking, biking, or Segway options—pass through or stop at Plazuela Machado and typically include further visits to the cathedral, Olas Altas Beach, and Ángela Peralta Theater.

  • Plazuela Machado is a great family-friendly destination in Mazatlán.
  • Visit on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings for live music.
  • There are several restaurants and cafes nearby.
  • Plazuela Machado is both wheelchair and stroller accessible.

Plazuela Machado is situated on Calle Constitución, just south of the Old Town, four blocks from the Mazatlán Cathedral, and five blocks from the Mazatlán Malecón. As such, most visitors find it easiest to arrive on foot, especially as nearby parking is limited.

Plazuela Machado is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is in the afternoon when you can cool off beneath the palm trees. On Fridays and weekends, stop by in the evenings to catch live music performances. Alternatively, visit Plazuela Machado for cultural events, such as book fairs. During Carnaval in Mazatlán, Plazuela Machado typically hosts the food vendors.

Plazuela Machado is the site of many affordable street vendors, but there are also plenty of nearby restaurants and cafes worth visiting. Popular Pedro y Lola, which serves Mexican flavors and lots of seafood, is one to consider; meanwhile, nearby Nao Kitchen Bar produces great Asian-Fusion cuisine. There are also numerous ice cream parlors, including Helarte Sano.
