POINT OF INTEREST

Point Pinos Lighthouse

80 Asilomar Ave., Pacific Grove, California

Lighting the way for sailors for more than 150 years, Point Pinos Lighthouse is tucked into the picturesque shoreline of the Monterey Peninsula. The lighthouse still operates today, and its beacon reaches 17 miles out to sea. Visit to take in the scenic location, ocean views, and beautiful lantern room, complete with original lens.

The Point Pinos Lighthouse is a perfect stop when you cruise the famous 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach, take a coastal ride to Monterey and Pacific Grove, or explore California's historic Highway One. To get more out of your trip, combine a visit to the Point Pinos Lighthouse with a regional tour, such as a sea car tour with GPS navigation. It's a great way to see more of the coast in less time.

  • Photographers should not miss the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from Point Pinos Lighthouse.

  • History enthusiasts appreciate the lighthouse's maritime history—it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Bring an outer layer, since even with the sun shining, coastal winds tend to be chilly.

  • You pay a small fee to visit the lighthouse, but the money goes to a worthy cause—restoring the facility.

Find the Point Pinos Lighthouse in the seaside city of Pacific Grove, a short drive from Highway One, off exit 399A. Drivers should follow Highway 68 to Lighthouse Avenue—take a right onto Asilomar Avenue and find the lighthouse just ahead, on the left. Another option for adventurous travelers is to book an e-bike tour. These tours often ride along the 17-Mile Drive, and stop for views at Point Pinos Lighthouse.

The Point Pinos Lighthouse is open year-round, Thursday to Monday, in mid-afternoon. It's closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and major holidays. Plan to visit between April and May, or September and October; in these off-peak months, you avoid summer crowds and experience sunny spring and fall weather.

A short drive from the Point Pinos Lighthouse is the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. This family-friendly attraction is packed with diverse ocean life, including jellyfish, sharks, and the ever-popular penguins. Highlights include the wave crash exhibit—complete with walk-through tunnel—and the 360-degree deep sea exploration video. The aquarium is open daily, except on Christmas.
