S.S. Klondike National Historic Site

10 Robert Service Way, Whitehorse, Yukon

Located on the banks of the Yukon River, the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site celebrates the history of riverboats in the Yukon. During the Klondike Gold Rush, the S.S. Klondike played an important role in moving ore, goods, and people up and down the river between Whitehorse and Dawson City. The boat is now a museum and monument to the era of riverboat transportation.

A visit to the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site is included in most Whitehorse city tours along with other popular area attractions such as the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre and Miles Canyon. Explore this mighty sternwheeler with the self-guided tour brochure, Parks Canada's official tour app, or on a guided tour. Kids can complete a discovery book to earn a special collectible souvenir.

  • Entrance to the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site is free, but there is a change for guided tours.
  • A free video highlighting the history of the S.S. Klondike is shown throughout the day.
  • Only the first floor of the S.S. Klondike is wheelchair accessible.

The S.S. Klondike National Historic Site is located on the banks of the Yukon River just outside of downtown Whitehorse. The site is adjacent to Rotary Park and is within walking distance of most downtown area attractions. To get there, take the pedestrian trail that follows the Yukon River from downtown or hop on the Whitehouse Transit bus. There is also ample parking at the site.

The historic site is open daily from 9:30am to 5pm from mid May through early September. Guided tours are offered daily in English and French. Tours may fill so arrive 30 minutes prior to your preferred tour time to ensure a spot.

Built in 1929, the S.S. Klondike was the largest sternwheeler in its fleet. Unfortunately, the ship ran aground and sank in 1936, but several of the ship’s components were salvaged from the wreckage and used to build the S.S. Klondike II. The S.S. Klondike II carried freight down the Yukon River until a highway was built in the early 1950s. In 1967, the ship was restored and converted to the historic site you see today.
