POINT OF INTEREST

Skagway Museum

700 Spring Street, Skagway, Alaska

For a quick introduction to Skagway’s rich and colorful past, a visit to the Skagway Museum is a must. Artifacts, photographs, and historical records bring the area's past alive, from the original Tlingit culture to the Klondike Gold Rush and present-day Alaskan life. Housed in Alaska’s first stone building, the museum’s granite facade is a sight in itself.

The Skagway Museum is the most comprehensive museum in town, featuring a well-rounded collection of Indigenous Alaskan crafts, gold-mining artifacts, and memorabilia from Skagway’s pioneer history. Once home to Alaska’s first college, the historic McCabe College building also served as a courthouse and a jail, school, and United States Marshals office before being converted to the town hall and museum. Museum highlights include a Tlingit canoe, Bering sea kayaks, a 1931 Ford AA truck, and mining tools and supplies used during the Klondike Gold Rush.

  • The Skagway Museum is a must-see for history buffs and first-time visitors to Skagway.

  • A small entry fee is required; admission is free for children under 12.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible.

The Skagway Museum is located at Skagway City Hall at 7th Avenue and Spring Street in the town’s Historic District, a 15-minute walk from the Port of Skagway. Parking is available at the museum, and a seasonal, wheelchair-accessible bus service provides transportation to the museum from the cruise port and locations around town.

The museum is open daily during the summer months, with slightly shorter hours on the weekends. Hours are limited the rest of the year, so call ahead for the current schedule.

The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park offers free ranger-led tours of the Skagway Historic District, including the Mascot Saloon, the Moore Homestead, and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway depot. You can also take a scenic train ride to the White Pass Summit. Other popular sights in the area include the Jewell Gardens, Red Onion Saloon, and the Chilkoot Trail.
