For a bird's-eye view of downtown Skagway, the historic harbor, and the surrounding snow-capped peaks, take the scenic drive along the road to Dyea and stop off at the Skagway Overlook to admire the views. From the viewing platform, you can capture panoramic shots of this historic Gold Rush–era town and the narrow Taiya Inlet, which connects Skagway to the rest of Alaska’s Inside Passage.
Most visitors to Skagway arrive via cruise ship at the Skagway Port. Tours heading to White Pass Summit or into the Yukon Territory often stop off at the Skagway Overlook, as well as other historic town sites like the Gold Rush Cemetery and the Historic Moore Homestead. Most shore excursions provide round-trip transportation from the port, and include a number of scenic photo stops in Skagway and along the Klondike Highway.

The Skagway Overlook can be found 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from downtown Skagway, just off the road to Dyea. To get there, head north out of town on the Klondike Highway and take a left on the Dyea Road; you’ll see the parking area for the overlook shortly on your left.
The Skagway Overlook is a great spot to enjoy the sunrise or sunset over the Skagway Harbor. If you’re visiting Skagway on your own, head to the overlook in the evening, after the cruise ships have left the harbor, to avoid the crowds.
Make the most out of your time in Skagway with a journey on the White Pass Railroad deep into Gold Rush territory. You’ll ride on a replica early-1900s train along the same route followed by Yukon’s Gold Rush pioneers, rolling through remote mountain passes, narrow gorges, and glacial rivers, and eventually stopping off at the Bennett Station House museum and the Yukon’s Emerald Lake before heading back to Skagway.
