POINT OF INTEREST

Sumidero Canyon National Park (Parque Nacional Canón del Sumidero)

Chiapas, Chiapas

With 3,000-foot (nearly-1,000-meter) canyon walls lining the Grijalva River, Sumidero Canyon National Park (Parque Nacional Cañón del Sumidero) is home to monkeys, crocodiles, and other wildlife. The best views of the canyon are from the bottom, so join the stream of boats cruising up and down the river, and take in the scenery.

Boat tours typically include round-trip transportation from Tuxtla Gutiérrez or San Cristóbal de las Casas, simplifying the journey to the canyon. Another option is to show up at the docks in Chiapa de Corzo and hop on a boat there. If you want to see more of the park, choose a guided excursion that stops at overlooks above the canyon after the boat tour. Alternatively, hit the trails on a hiking or mountain biking tour.

  • You can take your own food and drinks on the boat. You’ll also see concession-stand boats selling beer and snacks when you reach the lake (the tour’s midpoint).
  • The speedboats aren’t covered, so dress for the weather.
  • Wait times can vary, as the boats don’t run on schedules and generally just leave the docks when they fill up. Nearby restaurants and shops help pass the time.

The easiest way to explore Sumidero Canyon National Park is on a guided tour. If you prefer to get there on your own, you can drive, or take a bus or group taxi (colectivo). Frequent tours, buses, and colectivos depart both San Cristóbal de las Casas and Tuxtla Gutiérrez for Chiapa de Corzo.

The canyon is open year-round, but rainy days (Chiapas’ wet season is July through October) can make for an unpleasant ride on the uncovered speedboat. To beat the crowds, get to the docks early in the day.

Boat tours of Sumidero Canyon start in historic Chiapa de Corzo, which has been designated a “magic town” and often hosts special events. Most tours to Sumidero Canyon include free time after the boat ride to experience the village’s dynamic culture. Grab lunch at one of the many food stalls or restaurants, and pick up souvenirs from the craft stands along the cobblestone streets.
