POINT OF INTEREST

The Rising Sun Tavern

1304 Caroline St., Fredericksburg, Virginia

Embrace history at the Rising Sun Tavern while surrounded by 18th-century furniture and period-clad docents. Originally built as a private residence in 1760 by George Washington’s brother, the home was later leased as a tavern. It is now a historic attraction and one of the four Washington Heritage Museum sites in Fredericksburg.

While it has been nearly two centuries since the Rising Sun Tavern sold food or drinks, you can still experience the 18th-century tavern culture. Docents lead you through the rooms and show what it would be like to stay, dine, and drink at the historic establishment. You can pair the trip to the tavern with visits to the other nearby Washington Heritage Museums. Learn more about Fredericksburg history aboard a horse and carriage tour.

  • The Rising Sun Tavern is a must-visit for history buffs.

  • Save money with a Heritage Pass if you plan to visit the other Washington Heritage Museums.

  • The Rising Sun Tavern is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Despite once being a tavern, the museum is kid-friendly.

The Rising Sun Tavern is located in Fredericksburg, Va., midway between Washington DC and Richmond, Va. It's in downtown Fredericksburg on Caroline Street. Parking is available on the street and in city lots.

The museum is open year-round, though hours vary seasonally. Special summer at Rising Sun Tavern include whiskey tastings, history camps, special tours, and other drinking-related events. Visit the museum’s website for details.

The Rising Sun Tavern is one of four historic sites managed by the Washington Heritage Museums, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of Fredericksburg’s 18th-century properties. The three other historic establishments are the home of George Washington's mother, Mary Washington House, Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, and St. James' House. Hours, events, and admission costs vary for each of the historic sites, or see them all at a discount with a Heritage Pass.
