POINT OF INTEREST

Wrath Wines

35801 Foothill Road, Soledad, California

One of the most critically celebrated wineries in the Santa Lucia Highlands American Viticultural Area, Wrath Wines is a popular stop for oenophiles. The winery, established in 1975, makes the most of its region’s distinct terroir, and produces site-driven Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc, sold in three different series.

The small and family-operated Wrath Wines exemplifies the creative spirit of California’s many pioneering wineries—even its name is a nod to “the might of nature and the passion of art.” Led by winemaker Sabrine Rodems, the winery cultivates its four primary varietals, and produces three lines: EX focuses on expressing the personality of its Certified Sustainable (SIP) estate vineyard; the Winemaker Series showcases different approaches to winemaking; and the flagship Single Vineyard Series celebrates the unique character of its various vineyards. Visitors wishing to drink overlooking the vines can visit the winery’s on-site tasting room in Soledad, 39 miles (63 kilometers) south of Monterey. Wrath Wines also operates a second tasting room, conveniently situated in central Carmel.

Wrath Wines is a popular stop for wine-loving visitors to California’s Central Coast, and, given that it maintains two tasting rooms, it’s easy to plan your own sampling session.

  • Due to its location in the hills and proximity to sea breezes, the weather at Wrath Wines can be cool—bring light layers if you plan to sip on its pretty terrace.
  • Wine tastings are available for a set fee, which is waived if you purchase a bottle of wine.
  • Visiting the Carmel tasting room? Head to the next-door Cheese Shop and put together a picnic to enjoy in the Carmel Plaza courtyard or at the nearby Carmel Beach.

The winery and its on-site tasting room are located in Soledad, California. If traveling by car from Monterey or Carmel, travel via River Road; it’s a roughly 50-minute trip. Alternatively, the winery’s Carmel tasting room is conveniently located in the city center in the Carmel Plaza shopping center, and can be reached by local bus lines, by taxi, by bike, or on foot.

The winery and its tasting room are open to the public from morning until late afternoon/early evening on select days of the week—usually over the weekend. Be sure to check the winery’s website for the most up-to-date opening hours. Both sites are closed each year on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
