POINT OF INTEREST

Zuma Beach

Malibu, California

Well known for its wide, miles-long stretch of sand, Zuma Beach is considered by many locals and visitors to be one of the ultimate Southern California beaches. The Malibu destination draws beach dwellers, surfers, and out-of town travelers, providing plenty of space for activities such as kitesurfing, swimming, birdwatching, and bodysurfing.

A prominent filming location for LA-based studios, Zuma Beach’s ribbon of white sand stretches along the Pacific Coast Highway. There are multiple beach entrances, several on-duty lifeguards, and a parking lot with space for more than 2,000 vehicles. In addition to activities, Zuma Beach is a great place to people-watch, have a picnic, or walk along the gently sloped shore.

Though plenty of people cool off in the waves, the beach is known for its strong current and riptides, so you should exercise caution when going for a dip or playing in the water.

  • Zuma Beach has public volleyball courts, picnic areas, restrooms, showers, and a wheelchair-accessible walkway.

  • There are food stands and small markets and restaurants located at either end of the beach.

  • The southern part of Zuma is called Westward Beach. Here, you can access Point Dume Natural Preserve hiking trails.

  • There is a fee to park in the parking lot. You can also find free parking along the Pacific Coast Highway.

  • Dogs are not allowed on the beach.

The easiest way to reach Zuma Beach, especially with all of your sand toys in tow, is by car. You can use the parking lot or find street parking off the Pacific Coast Highway. You can also take bus 534 and get off at the Pacific Coast Highway/Morning View stop.

While this beach is a perennial favorite, water temperatures can run a little colder than at other Southern California beaches. The sand is less crowded during the week, though be prepared during the summer, as this is a popular destination for families with school-aged children. And if you plan your visit during the winter or summer, Zuma Beach is a place to watch for gray whale migrations.

On the southern half of Zuma Beach lies Point Dume Natural Preserve, a recreation area that offers hiking, beach play, rock climbing, whale watching, and coastal bluff vistas. To get to the beach you will need to walk across a bluff and down a steep set of stairs.
