Chatham figured prominently in many of Ontario's major historical events. Chief Tecumseh, with General Proctor and his Imperial Army, made a stand in the city in their retreat from Detroit. Sunken British gunboats have been discovered in the area—the remains of a skirmish of the War of 1812.
