Newton typifies the development of manufacturing in a mainly agricultural state. The washing machine industry began when F.L. Maytag introduced a hand-powered washer. An electric motor later was added, followed by the development of the cabinet type of cylinder washer. By 1925 Newton's industrial boom had started, and workers streamed into the city.
