Guadalupe Mountains Scenic Drive

42.0 miles: 0 hours, 36 minutes

Witness the sky-scraping Guadalupe Mountains rise from the Chihuahuan Desert on this drive along US 62/180. The highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet, the gargantuan Guadalupe Peak looms in the distance along US 62/180 as does its neighbor, the 8,085-foot limestone El Capitan.

Once submerged under an ocean, the jagged Guadalupe Mountains exemplify a fossilized reef. Ocotillo, prickly pear cactus and shrubs scatter across the sandy terrain at their base while trails into the taupe mountains lead to canyons filled with desert flowers. Mule deer and jackrabbits appear near dawn and dusk to escape the heat.
