SCENIC BYWAY

Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway

31.0 miles: 0 hours, 32 minutes

US 20, the Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway, packs a scenic wallop: lofty mountains, clear blue water, canyon walls so tall they dwarf a skyscraper. This short drive offers history (it borders the Wind River Indian Reservation) as well as geology (the rock formations here are among the planet’s oldest). It’s a spectacular setting for fly-fishing and white-water rafting.

US 20 follows the Bighorn River, named for the small population of mountain sheep that dwell along the canyon rim. Sheer rock walls topped with black and pink-colored cliffs soar as tall as 2,500 vertical feet on either side of the highway. The Owl Creek Mountains offer a rugged backdrop for water skiing, swimming and fishing at Boysen Reservoir in Boysen State Park.
