What is an A/C Compressor?
The compressor is one part of a vehicle’s air conditioning system. It pressurizes the refrigerant in the system to cool the interior of the vehicle. If the compressor fails, the system loses its ability to generate cold air. Service to replace a failed compressor includes recovering refrigerant from the system, removing the compressor and the receiver-dryer component, flushing excess debris from the system if necessary, replacing the compressor and receiver-dryer, evacuating the system to remove air and moisture, and recharging the system with proper amounts of lubricating oil and clean refrigerant. When servicing the compressor, it is also common to have other air conditioning system components checked including the condenser, accumulator, evaporator, expansion valve, orifice tube and fan motor.
