90.5 miles: 3 hours, 3 minutes
Taylor Highway (SR 5) offers excellent mountaintop vistas. The winding road, open seasonally April to mid-October, harks back to gold-mining operations that preceded even the Klondike Gold Rush. Bring binoculars to enjoy the remote azure mountains, bubbling creeks and wildlife such as moose. Then keep going to Eagle beside the banks of the Yukon River to understand Alaskan life—past and present.

Mountains flank Taylor Highway (SR 5) between Chicken and Eagle. Though wooded, the area north of Chicken opens occasionally for a vista of the surrounding landscape. The road, open April to mid-October, winds along the mountainside often without guardrails. The approach to Eagle and the Yukon River is accented by beautiful mountains with rocky outcrops.
