61.6 miles: 2 hours, 38 minutes
The spectacularly scenic Hana Highway (SR 36/360, also called the Road to Hana) traverses Maui’s northern coast. Plan a full day for this drive, and bring snacks and a swimsuit. Much of the 65-mile stretch is narrow, very winding and crosses a number of one-lane bridges; pay close attention to the mile markers, your guides along this wild and woolly road.
61.6 miles: 2 hours, 38 minutes
From Kahului, SR 36 heads east past sugarcane fields and beaches popular with windsurfers. East of Kailua SR 360 turns serpentine, snaking around gorges cloaked in tropical vegetation and passing waterfalls galore. Stop for a picnic at Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside (past mile marker 22) and explore the gorgeous black pebble beach at Wai’anapanapa State Park and Cave.
