Two-lane SR 550 ascends more than 4,000 feet from the town of Waimea up along a steep ridge to Pu‘u O Kila Lookout, offering breathtaking views of Waimea Canyon on one side and the ruggedly beautiful Na Pali Coast on the other. The route, also known as Waimea Canyon Drive and Kōke‘e Road, twists and turns the higher it climbs.

SR 550 winds through two state parks known for spectacular scenery: Waimea Canyon and Kōke‘e. A deep gorge with crimson rock walls, lush vegetation and soaring waterfalls, Waimea Canyon has been called “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” Kōke‘e State Park overlooks the stunning Kalalau Valley, rimmed by steep, green-cloaked ridges dramatically descending to the Pacific.
