Originally settled as a commercial fishing village in the 1800s, San Pedro is a popular whale-watching area December through April. With Wilmington and Terminal Island, San Pedro forms the Port of Los Angeles, one of the largest deep-water ports in the nation. Fort MacArthur, now an inactive base but once a formidable coastal defense, overlooks the harbor; Cabrillo Beach lies south and offers fishing and jet skiing opportunities, and some excellent tide pools. Cruises to Catalina Island leave the Catalina terminal near the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Harbor cruises are available as well. Learn More...
