About LafayetteLafayette was founded in 1888 by Mary Miller, a prosperous widow who named the town after her husband. In 1884 she discovered coal on her farm; within several years the coal mining industry spurred the town's rapid growth. Mrs. Miller established the Lafayette Bank in 1900, reputedly becoming the only female bank president in the world at the time.
With 20 neighborhood parks, recreational opportunities such as boating, swimming, tennis and picnicking abound. Community events include the Lafayette Quaker Oatmeal Festival in January and the Peach Festival in August.
