Slave Lake
In 2011 a devastating fire that originated in a nearby forest ravaged the Slave Lake community, necessitating the complete evacuation of the town. At the time, the displacement of nearly 7,000 residents was reported to be the largest in Alberta's history. Although about a third of Slave Lake was destroyed in the fire—which gutted the town hall, library and radio station—the community has since made what is considered to be a remarkable recovery and has rebuilt most of what was lost.
