DESTINATION

Summerland

Summerland also was the first town on the lake to employ electricity as an energy source; it was generated by a small hydroelectric plant built on the lakeshore in 1905. These and other historical landmarks are the focus of Summerland Museum at 9521 Wharton St.; phone (250) 494-9395.

Giants Head Park on 910-metre (2,986-ft.) Giants Head Mountain offers picnic facilities and views of Summerland, the valley below and Okanagan Lake.

Many beaches, including Sunoka, Peach Orchard, Powell and Rotary, line the shores of Okanagan Lake. Also of interest is the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC Trout Hatchery, 13405 Lakeshore Dr. S., where rainbow, brook and kokanee trout are raised; phone (250) 494-0491.
