Ferryland
In 1621 Sir George Calvert, later the first Lord Baltimore, attempted a settlement in Ferryland, but because of the harsh climate and frequent attacks by the Dutch and French, the venture failed. Lord Baltimore and his family abandoned the site in 1629 and founded a colony in what is now Maryland.
After Easton's time, the colonial wars continued the area's tradition of turbulence. Plaques at the Isle of Bois, a strategic point of defense at the mouth of Ferryland's harbor, mark the sites of two defensive gun batteries used in the mid-18th century against sea attacks.
