Maple Creek
South of town via Hwy. 21 is Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. This region of lofty hills, forest-covered buttes, plateaus and ridges is also marked by large tracts of ranchland.
The Great Sand Hills region is located about 70 kilometres (44 mi.) north of Maple Creek via Hwy. 21. Covering approximately 190,000 hectares (469,500 acres), it is characterized by fragile native grasslands interspersed with sand dunes up to 25 metres (82 ft.) high, fringed with small clumps of aspen, birch and willow trees, sagebrush and choke cherry. Strong winds blowing from the northwest shift the dunes east at a rate of almost 4 metres (13 ft.) annually.
