Terra Nova National Park
Numerous lakes, ponds and streams in the park contain eastern brook trout, salmon and Arctic char. Saltwater fishing offers cod, mackerel and herring. Moose, black bears, red foxes, beavers, lynx and various smaller species inhabit the area, which serves as a wildlife refuge.
Such migrating birds as the Arctic tern can be sighted off the coast during the spring and fall. Permanent feathered residents include willow ptarmigan, boreal and black-capped chickadees, bald eagles, ospreys and Canada jays.
General Information
Terra Nova National Park is open all year. The visitor center, which features a marine interpretation center with a touch tank, is at Salton’s Brook in the middle of the park. Information kiosks are at the campgrounds at Malady Head and Newman Sound.The visitor center is open daily 10-6, late June-early Sept.; Thurs.-Mon. 10-4, mid-May to late June and early Sept.-early Oct. Brochure boxes and the park administration building at Newman Sound provide information October through May.
Roads within the park are open all year but may not be plowed in the winter months. Hwy. 1 traverses the area; the Eastport Hwy. in the north end of the park reaches the Eastport Peninsula. Trails provide more than 100 kilometres (62 mi.) for hiking. One of the popular routes is the 9-kilometre (5.5-mi.) Coastal Trail. Some trails become cross-country skiing routes December through March or April.
Back-country camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, swimming and scuba diving are among other activities available. Docks along the park's shoreline provide mooring; a national park permit is needed for freshwater fishing. A park entry permit is required for all park activities; additional permits may be required for camping, docking and fishing. Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community features an 18-hole golf course at the eastern end of the park; the course operates from mid-June to mid-September. The resort also offers a 9-hole course.
Lodging, dining and supplies are available in such nearby communities as Musgravetown, Bunyan's Cove, Port Blandford, Terra Nova, Charlottetown, Glovertown, Traytown and communities on the Eastport Peninsula.
At the Newman Sound Day Use Area there are telescopes for viewing the nearby bird sanctuary; lookout towers are at Ochre Hill and Blue Hill. Guided hikes, outdoor theater presentations and beaver-watching expeditions are conducted by park interpreters in the summer.
