DESTINATION

Fort Payne

Fort Payne's Opera House, in the center of town, was built in 1889 and is the oldest active theater in Alabama. Restored as a cultural arts center, the opera house can be toured by appointment; phone (256) 845-6888.

South of town, Little River Canyon National Preserve's 14,000 acres offer recreational opportunities to suit most any taste. Kayaking, picnicking, rock climbing, bird-watching, mountain biking, hiking, swimming and canoeing are among the outdoor pursuits to be enjoyed. The Little River, which flows atop Lookout Mountain, has created waterfalls, canyons and sandstone cliffs, all of which can be appreciated from numerous overlooks along a scenic rim drive. DeSoto State Park is within the preserve. For additional information contact the preserve's headquarters at 4322 Little River Trail N.E., Suite 100; phone (256) 845-9605.
