Ten miles east on US 160 is the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. Hovenweep National Monument is about 48 miles west.

Take a birding field trip that starts and ends at the Cortez Cultural Center in early May during the Ute Mountain Mesa Verde Birding Festival, which also features lectures and an art show. Native American dances and an outdoor drama are performed at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St., throughout the summer; phone (970) 565-1151.
