The city’s more than 1,477 acres of parks and open space afford opportunities for picnicking, fishing, hiking and biking. Chatfield State Park, a few miles south, is a popular summer recreation spot. Roxborough State Park offers scenic hiking trails that allow for cross-country skiing in winter, opportunities for wildlife viewing and a visitor center featuring historical and geological exhibits; pets are not permitted. Cyclists enjoy riding along the scenic Mary Carter Greenway, with the South Platte River flowing adjacent to the trail. Pedestrians can take a self-guiding walking tour of the historic downtown area with its charming Main Street.

The Columbine Memorial in Clement Park at 7306 W. Bowles Ave. remembers the innocent victims of the 1999 shootings at nearby Columbine High School. It is configured around an inner Ring of Remembrance and an outer Ring of Healing, honoring all those whose lives were affected by the tragedy.

Western Welcome Week, held in mid-August, is a 10-day celebration that includes concerts, fireworks, a parade, an arts and crafts fair, fishing and sports competitions.
