Despite Green's prowess, the day came when the Rock Island Railroad won the race against the Santa Fe Railroad, becoming the first rail line through present-day Greensburg and eliminating the need for stagecoach travel.
After a tornado leveled most of downtown Greensburg on May 4, 2007, the community made a decision to rebuild and reinvent the town as a national model for sustainable living, utilizing only green building techniques and materials.
