Greensburg

Despite Green's prowess, the day came when the Rock Island Railroad won the race against the Santa Fe Railroad, becoming the first rail line through present-day Greensburg and eliminating the need for stagecoach travel.

After a tornado leveled most of downtown Greensburg on May 4, 2007, the community made a decision to rebuild and reinvent the town as a national model for sustainable living, utilizing only green building techniques and materials. The 5.4.7 Arts Center, 204 Wisconsin Ave., became the first building in Kansas to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum status. The center presents exhibits and educational programs; phone (620) 723-2600.
