DESTINATION

Onamia

The Mille Lacs region has been home to various Native American cultures for more than 9,000 years, and hundreds of ancient ceremonial and burial mounds survive along the shore. The Mille Lacs band of Ojibwe signed a treaty with the U.S. government in 1855 to preserve 61,000 acres around the southern end of the lake; the tribe opened two casinos in the early 1990s, one in Onamia and one in Hinckley.
