DESTINATION

Jefferson City

Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, on the river at the end of Jefferson Street, preserves three buildings that were the center of Jefferson City's 19th-century river trade: The 1839 Lohman Building, the 1854 Christopher Maus House and the 1855 Union Hotel. A visitor center in the Lohman Building offers a small museum and an audiovisual presentation about the history of the landing and Jefferson City.

Also of interest is the Safety Education Center and Law Enforcement Museum at the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 1510 E. Elm St. Exhibits include law enforcement antiques and five completely equipped patrol cars dating from 1931 to the present. Phone (573) 526-6149 Mon.-Fri. 8-5.

Stretching more than 200 miles from St. Charles to beyond Sedalia, Katy Trail State Park follows the former route of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. Running parallel to the Missouri River, the trail takes hikers and bicyclists through open fields, forests and wetlands and past towering bluffs, and winds through such historic towns as Augusta, Boonville, Columbia, Defiance, Franklin and Marthasville as well as St. Charles and Jefferson City. For further information contact the Department of Natural Resources, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0176; phone (800) 361-4827 or (573) 751-3443.
