DESTINATION

Fort Lee

Realizing that New Jersey winters were not conducive to movie production, the studios eventually relocated to Hollywood. Fire destroyed many of the buildings in the Coytesville area, where companies such as Universal Studios got their start, and the remaining structures were converted to other uses. Fort Lee, however, earned its place in pop culture when Gilda Radner, as recurring character Roseanne Roseannadanna on the Weekend Update segment of “Saturday Night Live,” would begin one of her monologues by reading a letter from “a Mr. Richard Fader of Fort Lee, New Jersey.”

This residential suburb of New York City is connected to the metropolis by the George Washington Bridge. The bridge serves as the southern terminus of Palisades Interstate Parkway, a scenic section of highway that skirts the Hudson River and continues north into New York.
