Today Roanoke Rapids is a popular stop off I-95, both as the first exit in North Carolina from Virginia as well as a notable midway point between New York and Florida.
The 4,600-acre Roanoke Rapids Lake, formed due to a hydropower dam, offers 50 miles of shoreline as well as bird-watching, fishing, kayaking and other outdoor adventures.
Nearby Weldon also is a popular fishing destination and is often called the “rockfish capital of the world.” From mid-March to early June the Roanoke River is packed with rockfish, or striped bass, as the fish travel upriver to their spawning grounds.
