The main attraction here is the beaches, and the city offers more than 50 paths for public access. Visitors can park on any road right-of-way that doesn’t display a “no parking” sign, and beachfront restroom facilities and a boardwalk area are nice conveniences for the casual day tripper in for a round of sunbathing or some crabbing and shrimping along the shore. Cyclists may opt to take a ride along one of the many bike paths that snake throughout the island.
Those interested in chartering an inshore or offshore fishing excursion should head to the marina, where it’s also possible to arrange an ecotour of one of the nearby uninhabited islands. Golfers can play a round at Wild Dunes Resort on the island’s north end, where two 18-hole Tom Fazio courses—the Harbor and the Links—challenge all ability levels.
